PhD Position in Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry at Dalhousie University (Beginning Winter 2026)

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, seeks applicants for a fully funded PhD position in the field of stable isotope biogeochemistry, to begin Winter 2025.

Project: Working under the supervision of Dr. Owen Sherwood the student will develop and apply biogeochemical proxies recorded in deep-water corals, sediment traps, and/or sediments to investigate long-term ecological change off Northern Labrador to inform conservation strategies for deep-water coral and sponge habitats in the region. The student will join a dynamic team of researchers in the Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry Lab, and work with collaborators with the Nunatsiavut Government and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This project leverages an award from the Northern Biodiversity Research Program of the Weston Family Foundation, ship time on the Canadian research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen, and a fully equipped laboratory for compound specific isotope analysis, including GC-IRMS, GC-MS, and Orbitrap LC-MS.

Qualifications: Prospective students should have completed a M.Sc. degree in Earth Sciences or a related field with a minimum GPA of 4.0/4.3 (A equivalent) and have excellent analytical and English-language writing skills. Exceptional students with a B.Sc. degree may also be considered for entry into the Ph.D. program. The ideal candidate will have experience with Gas Chromatography, Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry, or similar analytical methods. Other desirable skills include experience with statistical programming and GIS.

Funding: The funding package covers tuition, medical insurance, fees, and a graduate student stipend of $40,000 CAD/yr. The student will be expected to apply for competitive scholarships.

Deadline for the application is 31 October 2025, and the selected candidate is expected to begin in early 2026, negotiable depending on other program completion requirements.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The Teaching Assistant assists the instructor in the presentation and delivery of labs. Duties may include preparation of teaching material, marking, invigilation, and communication with students and instructor. TAs report directly to the instructor.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: Applicants must be senior undergraduate, or graduate students at Dalhousie University. Prospective TAs should have an interest in paleobiology and experience with quantitative data analysis using Excel and R.

Job Description: The Teaching Assistant assists the primary instructor teaching ENVS 4100 Environmental Science Capstone. Duties may include preparation of teaching material, marking of assignments, invigilation, and communication with students and instructor. TAs report directly to the instructor.

Qualifications/Experience: Applicants should have, at minimum, an undergraduate degree in environmental science/studies or related field. Availability during up to four class periods (Wednesdays and Fridays, 1435-1555) is required to assist with in-class evaluations.
